The goal of the game is to own as much land (property) as possible and become the richest player by the end. The rules are similar regardless of the Monopoly edition you own.
Starting the Game
Each player rolls the dice to determine who goes first. The player with the highest roll starts the game. All players begin on the “Go” space.
Buying and Owning Properties
When you land on a property that is unowned, you can buy it from the bank at the price listed on the board. If you choose not to buy it, the property goes to auction, where other players can bid for it. (Some players choose not to use the auction rule.) Once you own a property, other players must pay rent when they land on it.
Chance and Community Chest
If you land on a Chance or Community Chest space, draw a card and follow the instructions. These could include commands like “Go to Jail,” “Advance to Go,” or “Go to Pall Mall.”
Rolling Doubles
If you roll doubles (the same number on both dice), you get an extra turn. However, if you roll doubles three times in a row, you must go to jail.
Passing “Go”
Every time you pass “Go,” collect £200 from the bank. (Unless you’re sent to jail instead.)
Free Parking
The “Free Parking” space is a neutral area. If you land there, you don’t pay or collect anything.
Going to Jail
There are three ways to end up in jail:
- Landing on the “Go to Jail” space.
- Drawing a Chance or Community Chest card that says “Go to Jail.”
- Rolling doubles three times in a row.
To get out of jail, you have three options:
- Roll doubles within three turns. If you fail, you must pay the fine.
- Use a “Get Out of Jail Free” card.
- Pay £50 to the bank.
Building Houses and Hotels
Once you own all properties of the same color, you can start building houses. Each house increases the rent for that property. After building four houses on each property in a set, you can upgrade to a hotel. Only one hotel is allowed per property.
Selling and Mortgaging Properties
You can sell properties to other players at any price, but if there are houses or hotels on the property, you must first sell them back to the bank one at a time.
If you need money, you can mortgage properties. The mortgage value is listed on the back of the deed card. While mortgaged, you cannot collect rent on that property. To unmortgage, you must pay the mortgage value plus 10% interest.
Bankruptcy
If you cannot pay rent or taxes, you are considered bankrupt. When you declare bankruptcy, you are eliminated from the game.
